History

During the early part of the 20th century, business tycoon Michael J. Connell initiated LA’s first garment and textile manufacturing construction boom, which included the buildings at Santee Court. Architects Arthur Angel and Carl Leonard designed Connell’s first structures: the Connell Bldg, the Bailey Hat Bldg and the Brownstein-Louis Bldg. Each of these heavy concrete-framed buildings has a distinctive architectural style and displays the typical design elements of the time like unique decorative facades and oversized rotating windows. The Santee Bldg, designed by architect Frank Stiff was part of the next wave of construction for Connell, putting him at the forefront in the development of the rich and enduring architectural and cultural heritage of Los Angeles.

Each of the four buildings at Santee Court Lofts is designated a local historic monument, and the genuine lofts retain the social and architectural feel of their heritage.
