The need for new housing within Los Angeles has created an excellent
opportunity for developers to adapt and reuse downtown’s historic structures as
residential housing. When an existing structure functions for one purpose then
is altered to fit another, it is considered an “adaptive reuse” project.
Commercial to residential conversion projects are the most common adaptive
re-use endeavors that have taken place within urban city centers all across the
U.S.
To ensure safety and the best accommodations for Santee Court tenants, MJW
spent one year in restoration planning guided by various city departments
including: the Department of Building & Safety, Cultural Affairs, the Community
Redevelopment Agency, and the Los Angeles Fire Department.
